00:20 But you’re missing something…
00:22 Oh I know!
00:24 Teeth!
00:25 When we smile, we usually show off our teeth.
00:27 But don’t worry, Squeaks, you still look great — and you’re not the only one who’s
00:31 missing teeth!
00:32 Maybe some of YOU are missing a tooth or two!
00:35 Have you lost a tooth yet?
00:37 If you have, you know what it feels like!
00:39 Your tooth starts to feel a little wiggly, then a little loose, and soon you can twist
00:44 it all the way around.
00:46 Then one day–pop!
00:47 It’s out of your mouth!
00:48 Don’t worry!
00:49 It doesn’t hurt, and these teeth are supposed to fall out.
00:52 They’re your baby teeth!
00:53 Some people also call them milk teeth or primary teeth.
00:57 As a baby grows, these teeth slowly come in, do their jobs for a while, then get loose
01:02 and eventually fall out.
01:04 Lots of other animals have baby teeth, too.
01:06 Have you ever found small teeth around your house as your puppies and kittens grow up?
01:09 Yep!
01:10 Those are just dog and cat versions of baby teeth!
01:13 But … why do we have baby teeth at all?
01:15 Well, think of a little baby.
01:17 She’s so cute!
01:18 And also so small!
01:20 A baby is much smaller than an adult, or even you!
01:23 The part of her head where her teeth grow, here, is called the jaw.
01:27 And a baby’s jaw is so small that only baby-sized teeth can fit in there.
01:32 But when the baby is first born, her teeth haven’t grown in yet.
01:36 And that’s OK!
01:38 Because what does a newborn baby eat?
01:40 Milk!
01:41 And you don’t need teeth to drink milk.
01:43 But once a baby grows a little — when she’s about six months old — her first tiny teeth
01:47 will start to pop up.
01:49 Usually, the front teeth on the top and bottom are the ones to come in first.
01:52 When a baby has THESE teeth, she can start to eat soft foods, like mashed up peas and
01:57 carrots, or little pieces of cereal or crackers.
02:00 Just a few teeth are all you need!
02:01 Then, once she gets to be about two and a half years old, she’ll have all of her baby teeth — TWENTY of them in all.
02:08 Now, she can start to eat other stuff, like crunchy carrot sticks or stringy spaghetti.
02:12 You can’t just swallow that food — it’s time to chow down!
02:16 But teeth aren’t just for chewing.
02:18 Can you think of anything else we use them for?
02:20 Well…I’m doing it right now.
02:22 Talking!
02:23 We use our teeth to form shapes with our tongue and mouth, which lets us make the sounds we use to speak.
02:29 So a little kid often starts to talk right around the time that she has her first full set of baby teeth!
02:34 Without them, talking would be really hard!
02:36 So, baby teeth are small enough that they can fit in a little kid’s mouth, but they’re strong enough to chew up all the new food she’s starting to eat, and they can help her start to talk!
02:46 But those first teeth won’t be there forever!
02:49 As she keeps growing and growing, our kid’s head and jaw are growing, too!
02:53 And that means that she’ll need MORE teeth, and also BIGGER teeth!
02:57 Those baby teeth will be just too small to get the job done!
03:00 So by the time she’s about 10 to 12 years old, she will have lost all of her baby teeth.
03:05 And in their place, she’ll have THIRTY-TWO bigger, stronger grown-up teeth!
03:10 These teeth are ready for anything — now our big girl can eat crunchy celery, tough
03:15 nuts, and lots of other things!
03:17 But these teeth are permanent!
03:19 That means she’ll have them for the rest of her life — so she’ll have to take GOOD
03:23 care of them, to keep them strong and healthy.
03:25 So — why do you have baby teeth?
03:27 Basically … because you get bigger!
03:29 Be sure to brush your teeth AT LEAST two times every day, especially after you eat.
03:34 And floss, too!
03:36 Because a smile’s only happy if it’s HEALTHY!
